Groups needed better public information and parent communication without paying for a bespoke build or creating another store of sensitive member and safeguarding records. What we built ------------- An open-source Laravel website designed for reuse without a software licence fee from the start. Leaders can manage sections, profiles, events, news, joining information, contacts, policies and downloads; route joining, waiting-list, volunteering, hall-hire and general enquiries; create local calendar events; and pull event feeds from Online Scout Manager. Camp tools cover meals, dietary requirements, quantities, shopping lists and costs. The public site stores no member records, while individual news posts containing sensitive information can be password protected for parents. Clear Laravel Cloud instructions make deployment straightforward, and branding is configured in the admin within Scouts UK guidelines. The Result ---------- 3rd Newhaven Scouts gained easier updates, clearer parent communication and simpler event and camp planning. Other groups can use and brand the same open-source platform without a licence fee instead of starting from scratch, with a supported setup route that can also raise donations for the original group. What the platform does ---------------------- Gives leaders an easy admin for sections, profiles, events, news, joining information, contacts, policies and downloads. Combines locally managed events with calendar feeds pulled from Online Scout Manager. Routes joining, waiting-list, volunteering, hall-hire and general enquiries to the group. Plans camp meals, dietary requirements, quantities, shopping lists and costs. Provides a public-first site with no member records, plus password-protected parent news when sensitive information must be shared.
